Job Title:  Lab Tech Sampler/Gauger

Primary Responsibilities:  Sampler/Gauger is responsible for monitoring the levels of shore tanks and assuring the integrity of product through the regular collection of samples and transporting samples to the Lab for analysis.
 
Reporting to:  SGS Site Supervisor
 
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Travel to jobsite per shift rotation, and as instructed by the Lab for covering other shifts on overtime on off days.
  • Carry all equipment from locker to vehicle assuring that all equipment necessary to complete the job will be close at hand.
  • Visually inspect the Lab truck, clean, check oil and fuel levels.  If levels are low add oil or fuel as needed.
  • Meet with outgoing shift sampler, perform relief, and then take instruction from the Lead Tester in the Lab for the remainder of the shift.
  • Complete sample tags, and label all samples when taken prior to delivery to the Lab.
  • Interface with Valero personnel throughout the facility while delivering supplies, picking up samples, or entering units for job duties.
  • Work with Lab personnel throughout the shift.
  • Be familiar with facility units, and tank farms for sampling and delivery of supplies.
  • Maintain a schedule for picking up samples from units for the shift, and other work communicated from the Lead Tester during the shift.
  • Perform shift duties such as emptying trash, and organizing sample retain room.
  • Wear all protective clothing and equipment, including respirator and fresh air equipment that may be required to obtain samples that insure maximum personal safety.
  • Follow specific sampling/gauging procedures given by the facility.
  • Maintain open communication with Lead Tester to ensure that the samples are collected or delivered in a safe, timely and efficient manner.
  • Carry all supplies or samples to and from vehicle.
  • Communicate with the Lead Tester should there be any questions or problems while collecting samples.
Physical Activities:
  1. Climbing:  Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.  Body agility is emphasized.  The amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  2. Balancing:  Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching collecting samples or gauging.  The amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  3. Stooping:  Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.  This requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  4. Kneeling:  Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  5. Crouching:  Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  6. Reaching:  Extending hands and arms in any direction.
  7. Standing:  Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  8. Walking:  Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks.
  9. Driving:  Operate a Valero Lab truck to pick up samples, deliver supplies to units, and drive to tanks for sampling/gauging.
  10. Carrying:  Carry sample bottles and gauging equipment in carriers or in boxes.
  11. Pulling:  Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in sustained motion.
  12. Lifting:  Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.  This factor occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
  13. Grasping:  Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palms.
  14. Talking:  Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.  Detailed and important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, and/or quickly both personally, by phone, or two way radio.
  15. Hearing:  Perceiving the nature of sounds with no less than a 40 db loss at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without correction.  Must be able to receive detailed information through communication.
  16. Repetitive motions:  Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  17. Perform all above mentioned outside and in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
 
CONDITIONS SAMPLER/GAUGER WILL BE SUBJECT TO:
  1. The worker is subject to inside as well as outside environmental conditions:  Activities occur inside and outside.
  2. The worker is subject to extreme cold:  Temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
  3. The worker is subject to extreme heat:  Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
  4. The worker is subject to noise:  There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
  5. The worker is subject to hazards:  Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to heat or exposure to chemicals.
  6. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions:  One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin:  Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
  7. The worker is required to wear a respirator with supplied fresh air.
