Job Title:  Deckhand/Tankerman Trainee

Primary Responsibilities:  In charge of maintaining/cleaning the boat and equipment.  Properly secures barges to the tugboat and dock by handling mooring lines and cables in most weather conditions.
 
Reporting to:  Captain, 166 Fleet – Helen G

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Carries all safety equipment from vehicle to facility assuring that all equipment necessary to complete the daily job tasks will be close at hand.
     
  • Meets with the vessel person-in-charge to determine daily expectations in order to accomplish tasks of maintaining the boat and coordinating the logistics of the fleet in a safe and uninterrupted manner.
     
  • In most weather conditions, performs work duties in a manner that ensures maximum personal safety. Wears and uses proper PPE, including a respirator when needed, to perform daily duties as required and/or directed by the person in charge. 
     
  • After approximately nine months of competently working as a deckhand, one is eligible for selection into the Tankerman Training Program.  Training is conducted on scheduled days off.   While the program lasts four to six months, one must continue performing duties as a Deckhand at the same standards that was required to enter the program.  Trainees are compensated on an hourly basis while in training.
Skills/Qualifications:
Ability to lift up to 100lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50lbs.of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps poles and the like. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, hear and have a good vision. Ability to work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat or extreme cold.
