Description
Job Title:  Hopper Car Wash Inspector
 
Business Unit:  SGS Petroleum Service Corporation
 
Department:  Operations
 
Type of Position:  Non-exempt
 
Primary Responsibilities:  Safely wash out material remaining in hopper cars before inspecting them to determine if they still meet the requirements for Loading with Finished Product.
 
Reporting to:  SGS Site Supervisor
 
Specific Responsibilities:
 
  • Verifies track is clear of all technicians, equipment, and de-railers before moving cars into the Wash & Inspection Rack or activating the car puller system.
  • Connects and operates car puller or Trackmobile.
  • Moves cars through the Wash & Inspection Rack with the car puller system or a Trackmobile.
  • Uses forklift to move supplies for the Unit.
  • Uses computer and hopper car tracking software to determine if a hopper car is acceptable for cleaning out and Inspection.
  • Closely monitors Unit Equipment before and during washing.
  • Lowers wash heads into hopper cars with air hoist to clean out any remaining product heels before Inspection.
  • Inspects tubes on cars for pellets, excessive water or other contaminates.
  • Inspects interior of hopper cars for cleanliness and performs lining inspection to ensure hopper cars meet the strict requirements for Product loading.
  • Performs any required hopper car minor maintenance and documents all repairs.
  • Secures hopper cars for movement to Loading Structure, Storage, Repair Track or Repair Shop.
  • Completes Inspection paperwork to inform Rail Crew and Day Staff if a car passes Inspection and is ready to be loaded.
  • Completes documentation of cars washed, inspected and rejected on Hopper Car Wash Report.
  • Coordinates with switch crew to remove cleaned and inspected cars and spot dirties for washing and Inspection.
  • Keeps Wash & Inspection Rack clean, performs daily housekeeping duties, maintains Unit equipment and works with Day Staff on all special projects.
  • Maintains inventory of parts for hopper cars.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned in order to complete the assigned task.
Skills/Qualifications:
Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps poles and the like. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, hear and have a good vision. Ability to work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat or extreme cold. High school diploma or equivalency.
