Job Summary: Petroleum Service Corporation is looking for individuals to work as rail switchmen in a chemical plant/refinery environment. The primary responsibility of a rail switchman is to safely move railcars in and around the plant by working on the ground or inside the locomotive.

Work Schedule: Monday - Sunday 5:00 AM - 1:00 PM with rotating days off

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Examines track list in order to determine which cars are to be spotted, loaded, and/or shipped
  • Proceeds to the designated track(s) in order to separate cars to be shipped and loaded
  • Ensures there is proper track space available for inbound cars
  • Separates inbound cars and spots for loading/discharge
  • Ensures all cars that have been spotted are properly secured by setting the brake
  • Pulls and separates loaded cars ready for shipment from those that have been preloaded
  • Checks outbound cars to ensure all cars are properly connected
  • Weighs all inbound and outbound loads and empties
  • Ensures DOT certification for weight is not exceeded on outbound loads
  • Communicates with plant personnel and other workers via radio-telephones or computers to exchange switching information
  • Signals crew members for movement of engines or trains using radios and hand signals
  • Operates engines within railroad yards to couple, uncouple, or switch railroad cars.
  • Spot cars for loading and unloading at customer locations
  • Inspects engines before and after use to ensure proper operation
  • Applies and releases hand brakes
  • Reads switching instructions and daily car schedules to determine work to be performed, or receive orders from yard conductors
Job Qualifications:
  • We are willing to provide on-the-job training, however one or more years of experience in one or more of the following is a plus:
    • 1 or more years' experience operating heavy equipment machinery.
    • 1 or more years’ experience in a chemical plant, industrial or manufacturing work environment.
    • 6 months + experience working around railroad operations.
  • Must possess a valid TWIC card & driver’s license
  • 18 years or older and legally able to work in the U.S.
  • Stable work history with good references from past employers
  • Pass a drug screen, physical, and background check
  • Speak fluent English
  • PSC is a veteran-friendly company. Previous military experience and proven ability to follow procedures is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must have the ability to speak, write, read, hear, and have good vision
  • Lift 50 pounds floor to waist
  • Push and pull 50 pounds horizontally
  • Carry 20 pounds while walking
  • Walk three to ten miles per day
  • Stand four to eight hours per day
  • Climb stairs and ladders
  • Extend arms through normal range of motion while standing and squatting
  • Support oneself on a ladder with two feet and one arm extended for up to five minutes
  • Must be able to wear all required PPE without restriction
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat or cold
