Primary Responsibilities:   
  • Rail Switchman: Works with the engineer on the train to safely move railcars in, out and around of the plant.
  • Dock Operator: Serves as person in charge (PIC) of the dock, ensuring the safe transfer of products to and from vessels.
  • Unloader: Safely unloads material out of railcars into onsite storage tank  
Reporting to:  SGS Site Supervisor
 
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Rail Switchman:
    • Examines track list in order to determine which cars are to be spotted, loaded, and/or shipped.
    • Proceeds to the designated track(s) in order to separate cars to be shipped, loaded as well as to ensure that there is proper track space available for inbound cars.
    • Separates inbound cars and spots for loading/discharge.
    • Spots any other cars that may be designated for loading/discharge.
    • Ensures that all cars which have been spotted are properly secured by means of setting the brake.
    • Pulls loaded cars and separates cars that will be shipped from those that have been preloaded.
    • Checks outbound cars in order to ensure that all cars are properly connected.
    • Weighs all inbound and outbound loads and empties.
    • Ensures that DOT certification for weight on outbound loads is not exceeded.
    • Any other duties that may be assigned in order to complete the assigned task.
       
  • Dock Operator:
    • Completes and signs the Declaration of Inspection (DOI) & prepares Notice of Readiness, in cases where the transfer involves a ship.
    • Meets with the person-in-charge of the vessel for a pre-transfer conference in order to determine the facility’s expectations as well as what is required and expected from the PIC of the vessel in order to accomplish the transfer in a safe and uninterrupted manner.
    • Interfaces with United States Coast Guard, Department of Agriculture, and/or INS, (all in the case of transfers involving ships), as may be required in order to clear the vessel for the transfer.
    • Familiarizes the facility piping layout in order to ensure that the proper product and pipeline configuration is being utilized in the transfer.
    • Maintains detailed dock logs to ensure all events are recorded in chronological order.
    • Operates crane, hydraulic, electrical, or mechanical equipment in order to place the dock arm/hose in the best possible position to connect the dock arm/hose to the vessel.
    • Communicates with facility personnel via radio and/or telephone in order to advise as to current status of transfer and report any problems that may occur.
    • Operates manual and/or motor operated valves in order to control flow of product being transferred.
    • Gauges barge and procures sample of product from vessel as directed by facility.
    • Follows specific loading/discharge procedures given by the facility.
    • Maintains open communication with PIC of the vessel in order to ensure that the transfer is accomplished in a safe and efficient manner, as planned in the pre-transfer conference.
    • After the transfer is complete and the hose/arm is disconnected from the vessel, operates crane, hydraulic, electric, or mechanical device in order to remove dock arm/hose thus returning it to proper storage area.
    • Prepares and places on vessel a manifest as well as MSDS as required by facility.
  • Unloader:
    • Fills out loading record.
    • Ensures that railcar is positioned and secured at proper transfer rack.
    • Visually inspects the railcar to be involved in the upcoming transfer in order to ensure that it is mechanically sound and there is no defective equipment before unloading.
    • Unloads railcar according to instructions
    • Communicates with facility supervisor on any problems as they occur.
    • Disconnects transfer and complete required paperwork prior to releasing the railcar
    • Stores all equipment on transfer rack and cleans area and equipment.
    • Completes any other duties that may be assigned in order to complete the job. 

Skills/Qualifications:
Must have the ability to speak, write, read, hear and have good vision.  Must be able to work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat or extreme cold. Must be able to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) without restriction and pass any medical examination associated with the use of said PPE.  The physical requirements for this position include the following: Lift 60-80 pounds to waist and carry up to 300 feet, push and pull 50 pounds horizontally, carry 20 pounds while walking, walk 3-10 miles per day, stand 4-8 hours per day, climb stairs, climb ladders, step as much as 2 feet horizontal and vertical, extend arms through normal range of motion while standing and squatting, support oneself on a ladder with two feet and one arm extended for up to 5 minutes, grip/hold/pull 80 pounds.
