Job Title: PIT Man (Railcar Switchman)

Primary Responsibilities:  Safely unloads material out of hopper cars into pit for barge loading
 
Reporting to:  Plant Supervisor or Plant Superintendent, SGS PSC
 
Specific Responsibilities:
    -  Ensures that hopper car is positioned and secured over pit using cable puller system.
    -  Visually inspects the hopper car to be involved in the upcoming transfer in order to ensure that it is mechanically sound and there is no defective equipment before unloading.
    -  Wears all protective clothing and equipment that may be required to transfer the product in a manner that ensures maximum personal safety.
    -  Communicates with the tower man and start unloading hopper cars as requested by the tower man. Shut down loading at tower man’s request.
    -  Fuels and inspects air compressor and reports any problems during operation to supervision.
    -  Uses air driven opener to open all gates and control the flow of product during the transfer.
    -  Unloads hopper car according to instructions of Supervisor and plant guidance.
    -  Checks conveyor system in pit area during the unload process to ensure that all equipment is operating properly.
    -  Communicates with facility supervisor on any problems as they occur.
    -  Inspect hopper car for any leaks and complete required paperwork prior to releasing the railcar.
    -  Uses cable puller system to move cars from staging area to the transfer rack 6 at a time until all cars have been emptied.
    -  Stores all equipment on transfer rack and cleans area and equipment.
    -  Cleans transfer area and ensure that there is a clean unobstructed walk way at all times during transfer and completely clean area at the end of every shift. Completes any other duties that may be assigned, as mutually agreed to, in order to complete the job.
    
Skills/Qualifications: Must have the ability to speak, write, read, hear and have good vision.  Must be able to work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat or extreme cold. Must be able to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) without restriction and pass any medical examination associated with the use of said PPE.  The physical requirements for a loader include the following: Lift 50 pounds floor to waist, push and pull 50 pounds horizontally, carry 20 pounds while walking, climb stairs, climb ladders, extend arms through normal range of motion while standing and squatting.
