Primary Responsibilities:  The yardmaster has to have overall knowledge and experience of the entire switching operation as well as a thorough understanding of the railcar computer and dispatching systems. This role is designed to support the rail switching supervisor during normal shift as well as during after hours, weekends, holidays or anytime the supervisor is in need of assistance. She/he coordinates with railcar loading racks, railcar schedulers and railroad service providers, as well as giving direction to rail switching crews in effort to properly manage the Rail Operations at the site for all inbound and outbound railcar shipments as well as spotting needs.

Reporting to:  Plant Supervisor or Plant Superintendent, SGS PSC

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Provides leadership to the overall team and leads by example
  • Performs safety observations to help support our safety efforts
  • Maintains a daily rail yard track list used to coordinate all railcar movements on site
  • Coordinates with management and operations on how to safely and efficiently route cars to their specific destination within the facility; including loading racks, storage, outbound, etc.
  • Reviews freight train schedules, switching orders and freight shipping records
  • Processes all rail shipments ensuring all shipments meet customer order requirements, legal rail transportation weights.
  • Interactive communications with our customers to ensure all railcar customers’ pick-up shipments are processed for daily outbound shipments
  • Monitors the daily car count for all railcars on site to ensure a safe railcar count is maintained for railcar switching and communicate with customer when allocation gets high
  • Interactive communication with the Customer handling any customer complaint issues, special customer railcar request needs, railcar shipment route tracking, new / rush order needs
  • Communicates with customer when we fail to service their needs in a timely fashion
  • Make necessary communications regarding first aids or other incidents
  • Familiarize yourself with Dow on-call system, EDMS, electronic logbook, TSA requirements, accessing MSDS as well as any other Dow programs
  • Helps monitor employee attendance and communicates back to supervisor
  • Understanding all alarms and what actions to take (includes after hours, weekends, etc)
  • Complying with Dow workstation rules (internet usage, etc)
  • How to respond to drills/emergencies
  • Proper way to file paperwork for record keeping
  • Understands correct methods of researching for lost cars, missing/incorrect weights
  • Delegating duties to crews such as housekeeping as well as their responsibility to keep up with their assigned trucks.
  • Insure tailgate meetings are being held at the beginning of shift and during after hour/weekend coverage.
  • Proper installation of and placement of blue flags as well as permitting process
     
Skills/Qualifications:
Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps poles and the like. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, hear and have a good vision. The ability to work outside in environmental conditions,  which at times include extreme heat or extreme cold. Applicant must have High school diploma or equivalency.
 
  • A working knowledge and understanding of products handled as well as the ability to remain cognizant of the needs of other plant/terminal operations in relation to the Rail Operation.
  • Must be able to solve problems and adapt to change by adjusting plans and course of action while showing quick and sound judgment.
  • Organization and administration skills are key. (Communication, Email, Computer Skills, etc)
  • The ideal candidate will exhibit a high level of integrity and display confidence and pride in their work.
  • Possess good human relations and telephone skills and be diplomatic and cordial in difficult situations
