Job Title:  Loader/Switchman (Adipic Acid)

Primary Responsibilities:  Closely monitors the processes involved in producing nylon and moving and handling the product according to established procedures.  Provides the highest quality product to customers in a timely manner.
 
Reporting to:  Plant Supervisor, SGS PSC
 
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Checks acid in rail to determine acid level, checks empty cars to be moved, checks car inventory and ensures equipment is working properly.
  • Communicates and works in teams with co-workers, supervisors and other departments to discuss quality, safety and production issues.
  • Communicates with previous shift to discuss shift turnover.
  • Completes railcar Inspection Checklist to ensure they are empty and safe to move down the track.
  • Completes safe work permit after performing safe check (checking locks, switches, derailer, etc) by recording, date, time, etc.
  • Connects railcar, throws switches, chock and breaks car when cars are empty.
  • Monitors PLC to ensure separators continue running to empty car.
  • Observes and monitors screws to ensure they are turning properly, ensure that the acid is falling and monitors silo levels to ensure not dropping too low, acid levels and notifies Chemical operator of any issues.
  • Observes vehicles and pedestrian traffic at all times to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Refers to work related graphical information such as various computer screens, checklist, PLC, plaquard on railcar, etc.
  • Refers to work related materials such as company policies and procedures, work instructions, safety information, training information, SOP’s, Plan of the Day, checklist, forms, control documents, etc.
  • Takes inventory of railcars by counting, document quality, and recording number. Communicates inventory needs.
  • Uses hand signals and/or radios to communicate with track mobile driver and other ground person prior to moving cars to communicate which car needs to be picked up.
  • Works to prevent on the job injuries by following safety guidelines and wearing appropriate PPE such as leather gloves, goggles, ear muffs, ear plugs, steel toes, fall protection harness, dust mask, etc.
  • Attends all required meetings and trainings such as safety meetings, fall protection, JSA, safe work permit, and OSHA related trainings.
  • Completes Unloading Form to record what time and who emptied car until complete and then railroad out.
  • Documents on form what time each car is pulled in and out.
  • Hangs personal locks on lock box to ensure the derailers are locked and in place.
  • Refers to computer screens to turn screws and monitor silo poundage.
  • Switches compartments as needed when compartment is empty.
  • Turns screws on and off by operating switches inside shed.
  • Uses hand tools such as shakers, flashlight, pry bars, what bar, bumblebee sledgehammer, screwdrivers, channel locks, etc, to open compartments, vibrate materials, open doors, etc.
  • Assists in training new employees as needed.
  • Manually lifts railcar door when door falls out to put back in place.
  • Manually lifts shakers to place on railcar.
  • Performs housekeeping duties such as cleaning office, monitoring acid fall, cleaning shed and railings, cleaning floor, etc.
Skills/Qualifications:
Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps poles and the like. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, hear and have a good vision. Ability to work 12 hour shifts.  Ability to work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat or extreme cold. High school diploma or equivalency.
